Can I Claim For Slipping On Ice?
The recent heavy snow across the country followed by the drop in temperature has caused havoc on our roads. This has made it virtually impossible for some people to travel to work.
Many workplaces have closed and some employers have closed offices and shops well before closing down so that employees have had adequate time to get home due to the problems on the roads and public transport.
For those who did manage to travel to work they have found the roads and footpaths treacherous beyond belief.
We would hope to see an end to slippery/dangerous conditions by the time we arrived at work and entered our place of work.
However, many people may not be aware that employers have a duty to make sure that the entrances to and from the workplace are safe especially in this weather when due to the drop in temperature it is foreseeable that these areas will be slippery from the snow and ice.
An employer can make these areas safe by gritting them adequately and/or placing down suitable mats and warning employees of the slippery conditions with cones and placing down ‘wet floor signs’ showing hazardous areas.

There are certain Workplace Regulations that state that employers must ‘so far as reasonable practicable’ make sure that all entrances and exits of the workplace are safe and free from substance so that an employee does not slip. It is difficult to predict what is reasonably practicable but, for instance, it is not adequate for instance to grit some entrances and not others when all are used by employees and they are aware of this. It also is the responsibility of the employer to make sure they have adequate grit in store in the cold months and gritting is carried out in time prior to the arrival of employees at work.
