Compensation For Roofing Accident

May 20th, 2010 by Jerome Burch

Recent figures published by the Heath and Safety Executive have shown that in the roofing industry in the North West of England there has been a cause for concern in relation to the safety of roofers.

Last year almost 180 formal warnings about work at height were issue to building firms in the Greater Manchester Area. Health and Safety Executive inspectors served 148 enforcement notices in Greater Manchester which stopped unsafe work being carried out at height. The Executive also issued a further 29 notices requiring safety improvements to be made.

The concern of the Health and Safety Executive is that some companies might be trying to save money by not providing the correct safety equipment such as proper scaffolding.

On a national level, falls from height are the biggest single cause of death in the workplace in the UK. In Greater Manchester in 2008/9 two people died as a result of a fall and an additional 521 workers were seriously injured.

The Health and Safety Executive has shown concern for the roofing industry in Greater Manchester in particular by recently running safety awareness events for roofing companies.

The safety of workers in the roofing industry is something that should be taken seriously at all time and in all areas of the UK. The figures from Greater Manchester serve to highlight the issues generally.

Employers in the roofing industry have a duty to provide a safe place of work for their employees and ensure that employees are property trained and are proved with appropriate safety equipment.
