The rural landscape may provide the backdrop to thousands of postcards but there is also a worrying number of agricultural accidents occurring each year.

The Health and Safety Executive have published figures that show that an average of around 50 people are killed every year working in agriculture. The agricultural workforce makes up barely 1.5% of the total workforce in the UK but between 15% and 20% of fatal injuries to workers are in this industry. In 2007/2008 the rate of fatal injuries in agriculture was the highest of any industrial sector.

In addition to workers involved in accidents there are accidents involving members of the public. Agricultural accidents should arguably be of concern to all those working, living and spending their free time around the agricultural industry.

The number of potential hazards in the industry are many and the following are examples highlighted by the Health & Safety Executive:

Accidents involving farm vehicles (for example, being run over or if a vehicle overturns)

Accidents involving farm machinery

Falls from heights on farms (including fragile roofs and trees)

Accidents involving falling objects (including bales and trees)

Accidents caused by handling livestock

Accidents with electricity

Accidents involving manual handling

Child and public safety

Accidents involving building work

Chemicals and other hazardous substances

Vibrating tools

Hugh levels of noise (noise induced hearing loss)

Tree work

Drowning

The Health and Safety Executive have reported that some 25% of workers in agriculture suffer some form of noise induced hearing loss.

Bartletts Solicitors have acted for numerous clients who have been involved in agricultural accidents. Bartletts Solicitors also have a dedicated team for industrial disease claims including noise induced hearing loss.

If you have been involved in any kind of accident on a farm or in the agricultural industry that was not your fault you may be entitled to claim compensation.

Mr Green

Mr Green was employed as a farm labourer and was injured when a defective forklift caused a vehicle to fall onto his leg and cause him personal injury.

Mr Green initially contacted Bartletts Solicitors for free no obligation advise on his claim for compensation.

Bartletts acted for Mr Green on a No Win No Fee Basis (at no cost to him), and his claim settled out of Court for £5,000.00. Mr Green received 100% of the compensation due to him.
